It’s hard to imagine you would be glad to have breast cancer.
But some women are now saying getting the disease has changed
their lives for the better. These crazy-sounding women are finding new life in a sport called
dragon boat racing. Julie Grant brings us their story:

The sun is just beginning to set on another weekday as twenty middle-aged women start
gathering near a boathouse. They’re all wearing bright pink racing jerseys.
And they’ve all survived breast cancer.



A few work together to pull the canvas cover off their baby, a long, thin wooden boat.
This is what’s known as a Chinese dragon boat. The front end is a dragon’s head, with a fierce
red face and green scales running down the dragon’s neck. Dragon boat racing started 2500
years ago in China. Some say it was believed to ward off evil and disease.


At this Midwestern boathouse, these breast cancer survivors give thanks for their chance to
paddle a dragon boat. They get in, sit in pairs, and push off. There’s still some fun and laughter,
but most of the women grimace as they attempt to synchronize their race-strokes.

In a race, paddlers stroke about 75 times per minute. That’s a big change for breast cancer
survivors. They used to be told not to use their upper bodies. No carrying groceries, babies, or
vacuuming. It was thought they could get lymphedema, a swelling of the arms. But testing on
women in dragon boating has shown paddling is actually beneficial.


Paddler Lynn Fritz has had two bouts with breast cancer over the past ten years.
Fritz says she’s talked about her feelings with a support group to help her deal with the cancer.
But she loves dragon boating, she says, because it’s helping her get on with her life:


“This was something that I thought, this is fun. Instead of just, gotta introduce myself and say when I
had cancer, don’t worry you’ll get through it. We don’t talk about it out here, out on the lake it’s
just peaceful. I needed it, bad.”



The “Dream Team,” as they’re known, has started competing in dragon boat races. It’s one of
the fastest growing water sports worldwide. Some of the other teams are also exclusive to breast
cancer survivors. The Bosom Buddies and Abreast in a Boat are two Canadian teams. But most
dragon boaters are just regular paddling competitors. The women have to be strong to keep up.
The Dream Team, in only their first year on the water, won one of their races.

Jessica Madder remembers watching dragon boaters from the dock of her vacation home in Nova
Scotia. She always admired the women. She remembers the summer of 2005, toasting them
with pink champagne as they paddled by:


“Little did I know that the following summer, I was going to arrive home and have the birthday greetings that I had developed breast cancer that year and I had been through all the treatments. In fact, I wasn’t even two
months out of treatment when I first got in a dragon boat. So that was my first introduction.”


Madder paddled all that summer in Nova Scotia. Then she came back to her home in Ohio, and
went to see her doctor:


“His nurse greeted me for my appointment and she said, ‘How are you?’ Because of course
she had seen me as a recovering patient in the spring. How are you? And I said, fantastic! I’m so healthy, I’m a
summer athlete. And I just bounced.”


When the doctor saw how well she was doing, he wanted that treatment for the rest of his
patients, so he bought the Dream Team boat and life jackets. Madder didn’t know if she could
recruit 22 women to form a full paddling team. She quickly had 72 interested. She gets teary
when she talks about them:


“I still remember Linda saying to me, ‘I’m a survivor for 11 years and this is the first time the
loneliness of cancer has left my heart.’ I mean, how am I not gonna cry? And then they say thank you. I stand there, and I am so
truthful, and say, look, I did this for myself. I just wanted to paddle a dragon boat.”


Madder jokes with her husband, she wishes she’d been diagnosed ten years earlier. She’s
hoping she’s got enough time left to start a dragon boat team on every waterway in her state.

illnesses. Ann Murray looks at why most US doctors and nurses aren’t even
talking about environmental connections to their patients’ health and what’s
being done to remedy the situation:


In 1999, Jo Ann Meier was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was shocked
to discover she had the disease. No one in her family had a history of cancer.
And she only had one of the standard risk factors for the illness:


“Of course, you always speculate when you have a disease like this. Was it
something I did or was it something that I was exposed to?”


Meier says her doctors never talked to her about possible environmental
links to her illness. Today, Meier is cancer free and runs a non-profit that
raises money for breast cancer research. She hears similar stories about other
primary care physicians from the breast cancer patients she works with every
day.


“There’s a great deal of anger about the misinformation or lack of
information given to them in general. I mean, it would be great if your PCP would
say you have to look at what you’re doing on a day-to-day basis that might
be affecting your health.”


Jo Ann Meier’s experience isn’t unusual. Experts agree that most doctors and
nurses aren’t ready to deal with the environmental links to dozens of
illnesses like cancer or lung disease. Sometimes crowded doctors’ schedules
or fear of being seen as an environmental advocate get in the way. Leyla
McCurdy directs the Health and Environment Program at the National
Environmental Educational and Training Foundation in Washington, DC.
McCurdy says medical providers don’t know much about environmental
health issues because training is so hard to come by.


One of the challenges that we are facing in terms of integrating environmental
health is the lack of expertise in the area. There are very few leaders who
are willing to take the time and create their own materials to educate the
students at the medical and nursing schools:


“As a result of this small pool of experts, and an already crowded set of
courses, most med students get only about seven hours of environmental
health education in four years of school. Established doctors and nurses have
even fewer training options.


A small but growing number of health care institutions, non-profits and
agencies are stepping in to fill the training gap. On this morning, medical
residents and staff doctors crowd into a hospital lecture hall.


“Welcome to medical grand rounds. Our speaker today is Doctor Talal ElHanowe,
who is going to talk to us about estrogenic pollutants in the environment and
the risk they pose to people.”


“Can these chemicals, which resemble estrogen, in one way or the other, cause an increase in the risk
to develop cancer? And the answer is yes.”


ElHanowe is a medical doctor and research scientist. He works with the
University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Environmental Oncology. The Center
is developing environmental health training for doctors and nurses. After his
seminar, ElHanowe says response to the program has been good. But his job
of relating environmental health risks can be tough because doctors aren’t
used to treating diseases with causes that are hard to pin down.


“In the scientific community, we can’t prove everything. Many things are
very difficult to prove.”


ElHanowe’s boss, Devra Davis, says medical providers will have to be
satisfied with substantial evidence, not absolute proof, that certain
environmental toxins increase the risk of illnesses, and steer patients to safer
alternatives. Davis is a nationally known epidemiologist. She says
environmental medicine’s emphasis on prevention is the shot in the arm
American health care needs:


“Because no matter how efficient the health care system becomes at finding
and treating disease, if we don’t reduce the burden of the disease itself, we’ll
never be able to improve the health of Americans.”


But to make environmental medicine standard issue in schools and practice,
a lot more doctors and nurses will need to be educated. And that means a lot
more funding. It’s hoped as medical providers make the connection between
environmental exposures and public health, funding sources will open up
and environmental medicine will make its way into mainstream health care.

A new study suggests exposure in the womb to chemicals that mimic estrogen could increase the risk of developing breast cancer as an adult. Rebecca Williams reports the study looked specifically at a chemical that’s found in many food containers and plastic bottles:


Bisphenol A has been shown to leach out of food and beverage containers. Scientists are concerned about human exposure to the chemical because it mimics the hormone estrogen.


The new study provides evidence that exposure to estrogen mimics as a fetus increases the risk of developing breast cancer as an adult.


The findings were based on animal studies in rats.


Dr. Ana Soto is an author of the study in the journal Reproductive Toxicology.


“We used to think that the womb was a pristine environment. And we know now that it is not a pristine environment anymore. And I think we should be terribly concerned about that.”


Soto says the rates of breast cancer in the US and Europe have increased over the past 50 years. She says fetal exposure to estrogen mimics could be the underlying cause of that increase.

Cadmium is a toxic metal present in trace amounts in the air, water, soil, and in
most foods. It is also found in
batteries and cigarettes, and is released by some industries.


Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois are at the top of the list for overall cadmium exposures.


Recent findings published in Nature Medicine suggest that even low levels of cadmium
in lab rats caused changes
in their sexual development. Cadmium mimics estrogen, the female hormone that
regulates the reproductive
systems of men and women.


Steve Safe is a Toxicologist at Texas A & M University.


“Women have high doses of estrogen. They have much higher rates of breast cancer
than men. And estrogen has
been clearly linked to breast cancer. What we don’t know is, ‘Can cadmium
contribute to that? Does low dose
cadmium have any effect on humans at all?'”


Safe says more research is needed before any clear links can be made to human health.

It’s hard for non-profits to raise money. And it’s hard for big business to gain public
trust and admiration. But when the two are put together – struggling non-profits and wealthy businesses – it appears to be a win, win situation. Or is it? Great Lakes Radio Consortium commentator Julia King looks at one summertime case where the environment is the loser:


How many times have you heard these words: Come on: it’s for a good cause!


You know, like the elementary school teacher who takes a water balloon in
the face for literacy. “That’s the spirit!” we cheer. Because sometimes
you’ve got to go out on a limb to inspire people to action, to get things
done.


But what if someone asked you to smoke cigarettes… to fight world hunger?
Or toss motor oil in a lake… to help cure diabetes? So, there are bad ways
to call attention (and funding) to a cause. Water in face: good. Motor
oil in lake: bad.


Yet more and more these days, our “causes” are tangled up in elaborate
marketing schemes that muddy the moral waters of both charity and activism.


Recently on a 95-degree Ozone Alert Day, my local news reported that area
residents could brave the hot weather (not to mention the respiratory
damage) and test drive a BMW… for a good cause. Without the slightest bit
of irony in her voice, the anchor segued from a story about the dangers of
ozone, to a story about the joys of driving (the very thing that leads to
ozone on a hot day).


With what they call “The Ultimate Drive” campaign, BMW has helped the Susan
G. Komen Foundation raise over three million dollars (a dollar a mile) for
the fight against breast cancer. That’s a lot of carbon monoxide for
breast cancer.


Collaboration. Cooperation. Call it what you will, but the you-scratch-my-back-I’ll-scratch-yours-fundraiser is hot. Big corporations draw big money for worthy causes, and worthy causes draw favorable publicity for big corporations. But what if those big names are at cross-purposes with the fundraiser’s end goal? Or even at cross-purposes with other worthy efforts?


If good health is a goal, for instance, it hardly makes good sense to ask
people to drive on ozone alert days – even if the car IS a BMW. The Komen
Foundation also sponsors walks and runs – far more appropriate activities
considering the cause.


Nobody wants to see environmentalists (or asthmatics) duke it out with
breast cancer patients, but it’s time for organizations to fundraise with an
eye toward more than just money. Innovation and creativity is great, but
when the public is asked to participate in an activity, it ought to be a
positive one.


Now, I’m waiting for someone to ask me to drink margaritas… for world peace,
of course.
