Delisting the Wolf

Since being placed on the endangered species list in 1974, wolves hve
made a healthy recovery in the upper Midwest. Now, Wisconsin, Minnesota,
and Michigan are all preparing for the expected delisting of wolves from
that list. The Great Lakes Radio Consortium’s Stephanie Hemphill

Cormorant Control

In April, the U-S Fish and Wildlife Service denied a permit request
from New York State to kill three-hundred cormorants on eastern Lake
Ontario. The proposed management plan as well as previous killings by
individual sportsmen has Great Lakes Radio Consortium commentator Don

‘Waste-To-Energy’ Facilities Are No Answer

Garbage incinerators are making a comeback as de-regulation
of the energy sector is providing new opportunities for electricity

Are Peregrine Falcons Still Endangered?

In the 1960’s, the peregrine falcon population was virtually wiped out.
Today, there are about 2 hundred pairs living east of the Rocky
Mountains. The federal government says the species is no longer in
danger. But as the Great Lakes Radio Consortium’s Karen Kelly reports,
biologists who work with these birds disagree:

Prairie State Losing Its Prairie Chickens

The Greater Prairie Chicken was once common throughout the Great Lakes
region, but now it’s disappeared from states like Pennsylvania, Ohio,
and Indiana. While some flocks have survived in Minnesota and
Wisconsin, Prairie Chickens in Illinois are in trouble. Several
management plans have failed and now conservationists are actively
working to save the few remaining birds. The Great Lakes Radio

Low Lake Levels Impact Work and Play

The water levels of the Great Lakes are down this year…way down.
Lakes Erie, Michigan and Huron are two feet lower than last year at this
time, Lake Superior is down a foot, while Lake Ontario is down three

lower lake levels will have a big effect on people who work and play on
